2009 Advent Devotional: December 3
December 3: 1st Thessalonians 3.9 -13 Valerie Dunham
With a sigh of satisfaction, I lean against my favorite rake and view the multicolored heap that earlier dressed our trees in summer green. Suddenly my tidy pile is assailed by a capricious gust. My toil is undone by a force I cannot even see. Red, orange, gold, and yellow swirl aloft about my head shouting their independence. With renewed effort my trusty tines re-gather the errant leaves. The pile is restored.
Paul writes to the emerging church in Thessalonica. On one hand he expresses his joy and admiration for these new Christians. On the other hand he voices worry. Perhaps some have drifted away. He is eager to renew his presence with them and restore whatever is lacking in their faith. In spite of the persecution he is facing, Paul’s concern is for them. He encourages them mightily and entreats them to be persistent in their faith.
Prayer:
Ever-present God,
During the seasons of our life, a “gust of wind” sometimes separates us from you. But Your grace continually gathers us back. Keep us persistent in daily prayer. Through Christ you bring us near and restore our faith. Let the love of our Lord overflow towards one another. Amen.
