2009 Advent Devotional: December 10
December 10: Zephaniah 3.14-20
Ann Wolverton
Zephaniah?!? As a product of Disciples’ church schools, my old testament knowledge is lacking. According to the HarperCollins Study Bible, Zephaniah was one of the minor prophets, early in the reign of Josiah—642-611 BC—and probably at the same time as Jeremiah. Zephaniah developed the “day of the Lord” traditions and more importantly served as a reminder of the need for religious renewal, “where this world will come to reflect God’s vision of a world without violence, injustice, and oppression, a world where even God may sing in response to human singing” (Kent Harold Richards, Iliff School of Theology, Denver, CO).
The Transition Team has been working hard to discern our church’s future—so did the people before Christ. They anticipated the return of good fortune for God’s people.
What a wonderful image, as we sing Advent and Christmas carols this season; God is singing with us!
Prayer:
Loving, holy, visionary God,
Help us as we journey toward Christmas to reflect on your vision for a perfect world. Amen.
