December 12: Philippians 4.4-7

Tom Curry

Rejoice in the Lord.  With him by your side you are never alone. During this advent season, we tend to reflect on times gone by and what the future may bring.  As children, the Sears toy catalog was mulled over every night with our parents as to what we wanted Santa to bring.  As parents it seems we were/are caught up in the hustle and bustle and of this time of year and forget the true meaning of the advent season.

Two days after Christmas, just after Nancy and I were married, my father passed away suddenly. For years after this I was not the most pleasant person to be around during the advent season.  Then one snowy December day as I was looking out the window feeling sorry for myself, I started to pray.  While praying it hit me:  I was missing out on many good times and memories.   I was missing out on spending time with the family. I was missing out spending time with God. I was truly missing the whole reason for the advent season. Yes, it is the time for eating and exchanging gifts, but it is also a time to get close with God.  To share the news of his love. Reflect on the many blessings he has bestowed upon us, our family, & our world.
