This Sunday will be our final guest speaker and presenter, Rev. Dr. Rick Lowery. Rev. Dr. Lowery will preach in our 10:30 am worship service and then following a chili lunch, will do a presentation on Disciples History. There will also be a display of items from our FCC archives.
About Rev. Dr. Lowery:
Richard H. Lowery is President of the Disciples of Christ Historical Society and Adjunct Professor at Lexington Theological Seminary. He earned the M.Div. and Ph.D. degrees from Yale University and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He is an ordained Disciples of Christ minister. Rick taught most of his career at Phillips Theological Seminary in Oklahoma and served as dean of Lexington Theological Seminary in Kentucky. He has written and collaborated on several books, including Sabbath and Jubilee and Chalice Introduction to the Old Testament. With Bishop William Barber II and the Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharris, he is co-author of Revive Us Again: Vision and Action in Moral Organizing from Beacon Press. He is co-editor of Seeking God’s Design: Disciples Quest for Unity and Wholeness (Chalice Press, 2019). He has lectured and preached at church gatherings in the US and abroad and served on various Disciples and ecumenical commissions and committees, including the executive committee of the World Council of Churches Faith and Order Commission. Rick is married to the Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins, who served 12 years as general minister and president of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the US and Canada and currently is directing a special project toward ending racism for the National Council of Churches. They live in Bethany, WV.
