Every Meal (formerly Sheridan Story) provides food staples for elementary children who are food insecure over the weekends. Program workers place a package of food into children’s backpacks at schools around the metropolitan area every Friday. Before COVID, members of our congregation did this distribution in teams of two at Whittier Elementary School. It takes about one hour. However, last year because children were not in school due to COVID, Every Meal distributed the meals at school sites for families to pick up.
We again have the opportunity to distribute food in person at Whittier School. FCC will again distribute food two Fridays a month, around the lunch hour. (Hope Community Church takes the other two Fridays.). Several things to consider: very few of the children in school are able to be vaccinated yet; therefore, it would be important for volunteers to be vaccinated already; masks would be required for the volunteers; vaccinations are not required for staff in the schools.
First Christian also supports Every Meal financially, in addition to providing meal delivery.
